Q: Your background is quite unexpected for a yoga studio owner — you hold a PhD in chemistry. How does that scientific mind shape the way you teach?
Yoga teaches us to see ourselves and our world differently and so does Chemistry, so to me they are very similar; they just use different containers from which to observe the interface of life. In yoga we bring awareness, breath, body, emotion, mind, earth together and observe how they mix, what is experienced and how things change from those meetings. In chemistry we are mixing components in liquid or gas to see how they interact.
Q: What do you hope Yoga Underground becomes for the people who walk through the door?
I hope Yoga Underground is a place where people feel safe, accepted, and supported to meet themselves in their practice. The greatest teacher is the one within you, but we all need space, time and support to be with that place so we have the opportunity to meet those teachers.
Q: One thing people might not know about you or the studio?
One thing you might not know about me is that I was introduced to what we now call meditation back in 1986-88 when I played high school soccer. Before games, we would all sit or lie down with our eyes closed and our coach would guide us through a visual meditation to relax and focus our minds before a game. The seeds and the story of Yoga in my life was being planted way back then.
